Fremont didn't score many points against Mountain View last week--just 38.
But that was more than enough for the Indians to pull out a 38-32 win over the Spartans in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Jabbar Burton and Randy Rivera each scored in double digits to lead the Indians to the victory that pushed them to 3-2 in the division. Burton led Fremont with 14 points and Rivera tossed in 10 points. Burton had a couple of three-point buckets for the Indians.
Michael Hardwick supported with eight points in the win. Rich Lockmanese added four for the Indians and Thai Kim had two.
Fremont led by just a bucket after a period, 10-8, and by only a point at the half, 15-14. The Indians were outscored 6-4 in the third to fall back by a point, but they topped the Spartans 19-12 in the final period to pull out the six-point win.
Mustangs drop two
Homestead dropped a pair of El Camino Division decisions last week, falling 48-29 to Saratoga and 53-39 to Cupertino.
Matt Hall buried three three-pointers and finished with 13 points, but the Mustangs fell to the Falcons by 19.
Hall and David Blasquez had 13 points apiece in the loss to the Pioneers a couple of nights later.
Homestead is now 0-5 in division play and 5-10 for the year.
Homestead girls win
The Los Gatos Wildcats were unbeaten.
But they aren't anymore--the Homestead girls' basketball team saw to that.
The Mustangs handed the Cats their first loss of the season in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL with a 51-24 victory early last week.
Homestead backed up that win with a 65-31 triumph over Lynbrook to improve to 4-1 in the De Anza Division and to 14-4 for the season.
The Mustangs opened the week with the crucial win over Los Gatos, and it was a win that certainly didn't come easy.
Homestead jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first period, but the Mustangs were blanked 10-0 in the second quarter to go in at the half down by five, 16-11.
But the Mustangs came on strong in the second half to outscore Los Gatos 18-4 in the third period and 22-4 in the fourth to claim the 27-point win.
Yvonne Chen poured in 18 points, including a couple of three-pointers, and 5-foot-11 junior forward Hilary Parker supported with 14 points to lead the Mustangs to the victory.
Brie Ahern had nine points, including a three, and Yumi Minn was close behind with eight. Lisa Holquin rounded out the scoring with two points.
Homestead backed up that win with a solid 65-31 win over Lynbrook. The Mustangs outscored the Vikings in every period but the fourth, when they matched Lynbrook's 10-point effort.
Ahern buried a couple of threes on her way to 20 points and Parker finished with 13 points. Chen banked in a pair of threes and finished with 12 points.
Erin Morikawa added six points for the Mustangs and Minn hit a three-pointer. Jennifer Beltramo, Kelly Hadden, Holquin, Aisling Nolan and Becky Norlander had two points each and Amy Huyett added one.
The Mustangs get a day off this week, but will return to the court Jan. 30 to visit St. Francis at 7 p.m.
Tough loss for Fremont
The Fremont girls, meanwhile, dropped a tough 55-53 decision to Mountain View in El Camino Division play.
The Indians led 15-14 after a period, and held onto that one-point lead through the second and third quarters. But Fremont was topped 17-14 in the fourth and ended up losing by two.
Jenny White starred for the Indians in the game, pouring in a team-high 19 points. Colleen Smith added 15 to the cause for Fremont and Natalie Woo pitched in 10 points. Chi Tran added six points for the Indians, Shawna Harrison had two and Sheila Hess hit one.
Fremont slipped to 2-3 in the division with the loss.
King's girls win two
The King's Academy girls' basketball team put together easy back-to-back wins last week, whipping Liberty 69-50 and crushing Mountain View Academy 52-5.
Mandy Davidson fired in 13 points and Beth Davidson added nine to lead the Knights past Liberty. Elizabeth Meng supported with eight points and Candice Despain finished with five, including a three-pointer.
Rebecca Miller and Alison Rodriguez chipped in with four points apiece, Latisha Weldman had three, Michelle Steipp hit two and Summer Patmoor and Michelle Deberry had one each.
King's improved to 3-1 in the Christian Private Schools League and to 9-8 for the year with a lopsided 52-5 win over Mountain View Academy. The Knights blanked the visitors in the second and third periods on the road to the victory.
B. Davidson led the Knights with 10 points and Steipp and Patmoor tossed in eight apiece. Megan Beck Despain pitched in six each, M. Davidson and Miller both added four, and Spates, Meng and Rodriguez added two each.
Carter leads King's
Danny Carter jammed 40 points in two games to lead the King's Academy boys' basketball team to wins over Liberty and Mountain View Academy.
Carter poured in 22 points and Lance Westcott added 16 in a 74-52 win over Liberty, and Carter came back with 18 and Westcott had 12 in a 75-64 win over Mountain View.
King's is now 5-1 in league play and 10-8 for the year.
Soccer team falls
The Fremont girls' soccer team lost a pair of tight, tough decisions last week, falling to Wilcox and Cupertino in El Camino Division action.
Cari Gonzales knocked in a second-half goal, but the Indians dropped a tough 3-1 nod to Wilcox.
The Chargers led 1-0 at the half, then outscored Fremont 2-1 in the second half to clinch the win.
Fremont lost a tough 1-0 decision to Cupertino later in the week to slip to 3-3-1 in division play.
Homestead, meanwhile, lost 1-0 to Palo Alto and 3-0 to Los Gatos in a pair of De Anza Division games.
