Mobilehome owners must stop Proposition 199

The mobilehome community in Sunnyvale, in fact throughout the entire state of California, is deeply concerned about Proposition 199 on the March election ballot.

It promises "rental assistance" and "limits on mobilehome rent control," while in actual fact it would eliminate all mobilehome rent controls that voters have worked so hard to pass. Landlords would be free to raise rents on the strip of land our homes are on as high as they wish.

To the retired seniors, and to young first-home families, the passage of Proposition 199 is a disaster that we cannot allow to happen. They own their own homes, with mortgages, and at the same time pay park owners high rents. This proposition is unfair, and would result in making mobilehomes unaffordable.

Vote "no" on Proposition 199.

Lockheed's sponsorship shows concern for schools

This is an excerpt of a letter sent to Lockheed Martin.

In a visit to The Sun office, I gained information that Lockheed Martin Corp. is now actively encouraging local reporting and publication of school activities by sponsoring the inclusion of a regular "schools" interest page.

Speaking as a member of the California Society of Professional Engineers Education Foundation, allow me to congratulate and welcome Lockheed Martin Corp. to the ranks of corporate citizens concerned with the effective quality of current educational institutions.

CSPE Education Foundation exists to promote voluntary study of mathematics in all California schools, public and private, through the national Mathcounts competition for seventh- and eighth-grade "mathletes." It also operates a scholarship program for graduating high-school seniors who intend to earn bachelor's degrees in engineering and science.

Our 1995 attempt to entice Bishop and Columbia middle schools to field Mathcounts teams did not bear fruit for this February, but we will continue active encouragement in that direction for the local competition in 1997. The Santa Clara County Mathcounts contest takes place on Feb. 24 at San Jose State University.
