New Moffett, NASA chiefs appointed
Ken K. Munechika, director of NASA's Ames Research Center, on Jan. 17 was named director of Moffett Federal Airfield. Munechika will step into the newly created position on March 4.
NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin said that the move reflects Moffett Field's increasing importance to current and future occupants and to Silicon Valley.
In his new position, Munechika will manage the airfield and serve as senior NASA liaison to resident federal agencies.
He will be succeeded as Ames director by Dr. Henry McDonald, former assistant director of computational sciences and professor of mechanical engineer-ing at the Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University, Goldin said.
Serial rape suspect arrested, charged
A five-month search for a man suspected of raping several women along the Peninsula ended in Sunnyvale on Jan. 15 when police arrested Romel Demetrius Reid.
Reid, a 25-year-old resident of East Palo Alto, was arraigned Jan. 18 in Palo Alto Muni-cipal Court on 17 felony charges, including the Sept. 8 rape of a Sunnyvale woman. Public Safety said the woman was grabbed, pulled into some bushes and raped as she was walking to work near Sunnyvale Medical Clinic.
Palo Alto police said Reid may be responsible for other unreported sex crimes and robberies along the Peninsula. Investigators cited the nearly two-month gap between alleged incidents last fall as the reason to think Reid committed more assaults.
