Friends have until May to raise money for pool

At the council meeting last weekend, City Manager Robert LaSala said backers of a joint-use pool, to be shared by Fremont High and the city, have until May to raise part of the money. The District will design the pool in the summer and will need to if the city is to be involved. The city says $1,000,000 must be raised by the private sector to make the partnership possible. Holly Lofgren, head of Friends of the Fremont Pool, says she's working hard to raise the money from corporate backers.

    Child-torture suspect pleads not guilty

Elizabeth Panuncialman, arrested for allegedly beating her 14 year-old son as he was bound by belts to a chair, entered a not guilty plea in Sunnyvale criminal court on Tuesday. Her husband Robert Panuncialman entered the same plea earlier last month.

Sunnyvale Public Safety reportedly found the boy bound, gagged, and bloodied in his bedroom after witnesses reported seeing the boy violently hauled from Sunnyvale Middle School by Robert Panuncialman. A date for a preliminary hearing is due to be set on February 15. Elizabeth Panuncialman remains in county jail. Her husband posted bond in December. The pair face possible life sentences for torture.

    VTA discount tokens

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority announced recently that it has begun accepting discount ride tokens on all local and express busses.

The tokens are available for adults and children at a 20 percent discount for a bag of ten single-ride fares, and can be purchased at some grocery and drug stores and the VTA's Downtown Customer Service Center at 2 North First Street at Santa Clara Street. Ten rides are available to adults for $10, a $2.50 discount, and for $5.50 for children, a $1.50 discount.

For more information on the program, call 408.321.2300 or check www.vta.org.

    US Navy Wants You

The Navy recently opened a new Sunnyvale recruiting station at 1320 South May Avenue in the Albertson's shopping center. Four recruiters, headed by Petty Officer Federico Gopez, will operate the office. Gopez will be responsible for finding young adults interested in joining up. The Navy did not meet it's recruiting goals last year.
