Fremont boys win a pair in basketball

Rabena finds the range for Firebirds with 39 points

By Dick Sparrer

Melvin Rabena had the range last week.

And because of it, the Fremont boys basketball team chalked up two more victories in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Rabena buried six three-pointers and poured in 39 points in two games to lead the Firebirds to wins over Mountain View (45-35) and Homestead (32-29). The two victories helped Fremont improve to 4-1 in the division and to 9-9 for the year.

Rabena drilled four threes and finished with 23 points in the 10-point win over the Spartans to open the week. Cameron McNeil supported with 11 points, including a pair of threes.

Reynold Carlos chipped in with four points, Tam Kim had three and Glenn Marasigan and Darrel Sansano added two apiece.

The Firebirds were up by two after a period and by four at the half before taking control of the game by topping Mountain View by nine in the third quarter.

Fremont had to battle from behind to pull out the tight three-point win over Homestead to finish the week.

The Mustangs actually blanked the Firebirds 11-0 in the first period and owned a convincing 18-6 lead at intermission.

But Fremont turned it on in the second half. The 'Birds topped the Mustangs 18-4 in the third quarter to take a two-point lead, then held on in the fourth to clinch the win.

Rabena was the top scorer for Fremont with 16 points, including a couple of three-pointers. Marasigan and Jacab Esau tossed in five points apiece, and McNeil and Carlos added three each.

Dat Lai had eight points to lead all Homestead scorers in the game. Matt Hoffman hit two threes to finish with six points, Matt Hovik and Matt Root had four points each, Max McKay added three points and Steve Lambert and Trenton Hill had two apiece.

The Mustangs, now 1-4 in the division and 4-14 for the year, had lost 51-42 to Gunn to open the week.

Hoffman led the Mustangs with nine points. Hovik had a couple of threes on his way to eight points, and McKay added eight.
