Rainy days and soggy turf made it tough to play much soccer last week, but it wasn't wet enough to keep the Homestead boys' soccer team from pulling out a thrilling 1-0 win over Monta Vista in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Daniel Castillo broke up a scoreless tie when he knocked in a second-half goal off a Justin Bowers assist.
The win left the Mustangs 1-2-2 in division play and they improved to 5-4-4 for the year.
Monta Vista lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Palo Alto two days later to slip to 3-2-1 in league play and 5-2-4 for the year. Takeshi Egawa scored the lone goal for the Matadors in the loss.
Charith Peiris knocked in a goal off a Shawn Hargrove assist, but it wasn't enough for Fremont in a 2-1 loss to Milpitas in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
Peiris helped the Firebirds move out to a 1-0 first-half lead against the Trojans, but Milpitas fired in two goals in the second half to pull out the victory.
The Firebirds slipped to 0-3-2 in the division with the loss. They are 2-4-3 for the year.
The Fremont girls, meanwhile, were held scoreless in a pair of El Camino games, but still managed a tie. The Lady Birds lost 6-0 to Milpitas, but came back to fight Santa Clara to a scoreless tie. The 'Birds are now 1-4-1 in the division and 6-6-2 for the year.
Homestead also finished the week with a win and a tie. The Mustangs matched Monta Vista 1-1 before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to Los Gatos. Homestead is 6-6-1 for the year and 0-6-1 in league play.
Monta Vista rebounded from the tie with a 3-1 win over Palo Alto. The Matadors pushed their division record to 2-3-1 with the win and they are 3-4-1 for the year.
In other local soccer action, the King's Academy girls' soccer team slipped to 1-6 in the Christian Private Schools League after losing 4-1 to Woodside Priory.
