Castillo goal lifts Mustangs to win

Rainy days and soggy turf made it tough to play much soccer last week, but it wasn't wet enough to keep the Homestead boys' soccer team from pulling out a thrilling 1-0 win over Monta Vista in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Daniel Castillo broke up a scoreless tie when he knocked in a second-half goal off a Justin Bowers assist.

The win left the Mustangs 1-2-2 in division play and they improved to 5-4-4 for the year.

Monta Vista lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Palo Alto two days later to slip to 3-2-1 in league play and 5-2-4 for the year. Takeshi Egawa scored the lone goal for the Matadors in the loss.

Charith Peiris knocked in a goal off a Shawn Hargrove assist, but it wasn't enough for Fremont in a 2-1 loss to Milpitas in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Peiris helped the Firebirds move out to a 1-0 first-half lead against the Trojans, but Milpitas fired in two goals in the second half to pull out the victory.

The Firebirds slipped to 0-3-2 in the division with the loss. They are 2-4-3 for the year.

The Fremont girls, meanwhile, were held scoreless in a pair of El Camino games, but still managed a tie. The Lady Birds lost 6-0 to Milpitas, but came back to fight Santa Clara to a scoreless tie. The 'Birds are now 1-4-1 in the division and 6-6-2 for the year.

Homestead also finished the week with a win and a tie. The Mustangs matched Monta Vista 1-1 before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to Los Gatos. Homestead is 6-6-1 for the year and 0-6-1 in league play.

Monta Vista rebounded from the tie with a 3-1 win over Palo Alto. The Matadors pushed their division record to 2-3-1 with the win and they are 3-4-1 for the year.

In other local soccer action, the King's Academy girls' soccer team slipped to 1-6 in the Christian Private Schools League after losing 4-1 to Woodside Priory.
