Fremont's Osian pins 2nd at tourney
By Dick Sparrer
Chris Osian of Fremont won a trip to the state wrestling tournament last year.
And it looks like he has plans of returning this season.
Osian made his point last weekend with a solid showing at the rugged Mid-Cal Tournament in Gilroy. Osian finished second at 114 pounds to lead the Fremont effort at the tourney that attracts many of the top wrestlers in the state.
Osian finished fourth at the Central Coast Section tournament last winter to win a trip to the state tournament. Fremont hopes to send Osian and senior superstar Anthony Baza on a return trip to the state tournament in Stockton in March.
But the news wasn't good for the Firebirds earlier in the week when they were stung with a 47-15 dual match loss by Los Gatos. The loss left Fremont 2-1 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Fremont could manage just three victories in the match, one of them a win by injury default by Baza at 147 pounds.
Kai Garcia and Luke Tran were the only winners for Fremont on the night.
Garcia, who placed high enough in league last year to qualify for CCS, posted a 9-2 win at 127 pounds for the Firebirds, and Tran, a junior varsity league champion last winter, pinned at 142 pounds.
The Firebirds will be back on the mat on Feb. 1, 6:30 p.m., when they host Monta Vista. Fremont will entertain Cupertino On Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m., before heading to the league finals on Feb. 10 at Wilcox.
