Pedestrian killed on El Camino

Sunnyvale police say an 80-year-old man died after a van struck him as he was walking across W. El Camino Real.

Police said the accident, reported at 10:50 a.m. Jan. 24, occurred when the man crossed the busy highway without using a crosswalk somewhere between Sunnyvale Avenue and Cezanne Drive. He was taken to Stanford Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:34 that afternoon.

The man's name is being withheld until relatives can be notified.

Center rings in Chinese New Year

A 56-inch television and $5,000 cash are just two of more than 200 prizes merchants from Cupertino Village are raffling off this Saturday at the shopping center's first Chinese New Year celebration.

Other raffle prizes are a piano, $1,000 cash and a ruby ring. Raffle tickets are available through Saturday at the East-West Bank in the shopping center, located at the corner of Homestead and Wolfe roads.

The celebration starts at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., Mayor Michael Chang and City Councilman John Statton will preside over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the center's grand re-opening.

The celebration will feature karaoke and a traditional Chinese lion dance.
