Two local high schools score in top 10 on SAT
Schools in the Fremont Union High School District boasted two of the top 10 highest Scholastic Aptitude Test scores in the state.
Superintendent Joe Hamilton said the high rankings are always welcome, but that many unseen factors, such as the number of students from each school who actually take the test, can unduly influence the statistics.
"If you only have 10 students from your school who are taking the test, and those 10 happen to be the brightest kids, then your school scores higher," he said.
Lynbrook placed third, up from sixth place last year, and Monta Vista ranked 10th among 732 high schools.
Whitney High School, a magnet school in Cerritos, Calif., ranked No. 1 for the third consecutive year.
The combined scored of the average Lynbrook student taking the SAT in 1997 was 1,231.
An admissions and records representative at San Jose State University said a score higher than 1,200, coupled with a 3.0 grade-point average, virtually assures admission into a University of California school, and it will definitely secure a spot at a state college.
Students at Monta Vista scored 1,191 in 1997, up 80 points from two years ago.
Homestead ranked 25th, up from 31st two years ago. Cupertino placed 133rd, falling from last year's placing of 18th.
