Firebirds give Los Gatos a match, end up falling

By DICK SPARRER

For more than half a match, the Fremont wrestling team gave Los Gatos all it could handle.

But then the Wildcats called in the heavyweights.

Los Gatos won six straight bouts in the upper weights to pull out a 48-23 win over the Firebirds in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Firebirds were hanging right with the Cats most of the way. The teams were locked in a 17-17 tie after the first seven matches, but that's when Gatos started its straight of victories.

Vi Hang and Jose Guardado had gotten the 'Birds off to a quick start with back-to-back wins to open the match. Hang won on a technical fall in the second round at 103 pounds and Guardado pinned with 15 seconds left in the first round at 112.

Gatos put together three straight wins before Fremont struck again. Emilio Vallejos won 11-4 at 135 pounds and Jeff Sanchez tied the match with a 9-5 victory at 140.

But Los Gatos strung together six wins from 145 to 215 pounds, four of them by fall, to claim the victory.

Heavyweight Alberto Luvian gave Fremont one final chance to cheer when he pinned in the first round at 275 pounds.

The Firebirds came back a week later to lose a lopsided 69-6 decision to Wilcox to slip to 1-3 in the division. Joseph Ramirez pinned with eight seconds remaining in the first round at 189 pounds for Fremont's only victory of the night.

Soccer

Daniel Castillo drilled home a second-half goal to help the Homestead boys' soccer team pull out a 1-1 tie against Mountain View in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

The Mustangs slipped to 1-3-3 in the division and 5-5-6 for the year later in the week when they lost a tight 1-0 decision to Los Gatos.

The Fremont boys lost a 1-0 nod to Saratoga to drop to 0-4-2 in the El Camino Division.

The Fremont girls' soccer team slipped to 1-5-1 in the El Camino Division and to 6-7-2 for the year after dropping a 6-0 decision to Saratoga.

Homestead fell to 0-7-1 in the De Anza Division with a 4-1 loss to Mountain View. The Mustangs are 6-8-1 for the year.
