Backpacks for Schools
The Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club, in cooperation with Fremont High School students and Maxim Integrated Products, recently assembled more than 1,400 backpacks filled with pens, pencils, paper, dictionaries and calculators to be donated to elementary school district students. The 10 schools that will receive the backpacks, including two junior high schools, will use the backpacks in various ways, from promoting grade point average increases, encouraging parent involvement to prizes for math, science and reading contests. Sunnyvale businesses McWhorters and Office Depot have worked with the Rotary members on the project. Other businesses that supported the project include Jake's pizza and Safeway Stores in Sunnyvale and Preston's Candies in Los Altos.
Spay and Neuter Month
The Humane Society of Santa Clara County offers spay and neuter surgery for half the regular price during the month of February, to promote saving the lives of homeless animals. Spaying and neutering helps prevent pet overpopulation, prevents certain types of reproductive cancers from developing, and helps prevent pets from wandering from home in search of a mate. For more information, call 408.727.3383, ext. 763.
