Mustangs need to win at St. Francis

Fremont pins loss on Monta Vista

The St. Francis Lancers are tough no matter where they play.

But when they run out onto their own floor in Mountain View... well, no one steps into the Lancers' house and has an easy time of it.

Homestead girls basketball coach Wade Nakamura certainly knows that. But he also knows that his Mustangs need a win over the Lancers to move into a tie for first place in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

And that means, if Homestead has come out of the Lancers' house with a victory, so be it.

That's just what the Mustangs will be trying to do this Thursday. They need to upset the first-place Lancers to create a first-place tie in the De Anza Division.

St. Francis enters play this week with a 9-0 record and sitting alone atop the division standings. Homestead started the week 7-1, but figured to pick up a win over last-place Los Gatos on Feb. 6, 7 p.m., at home.

That means that first place will be on the line when the Mustangs and Lancers collied at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 8.

The Mustangs, whose only league loss was at the hands of the Lancers, stayed close in the race with a win over Gunn in their only game last week.

Senior superstar Julia Randall poured in 25 points, including a three-pointer, to lead the Mustangs to a 57-40 win over the Titans.

Tanya Green, another senior sensation for Homestead, supported with 17 points in the win. Sabrina Gauthier chipped in with eight points, Charlene Jarrett hit four, Mandy Wald had two and Janelle Kitasoe hit one. Gauthier popped a three-pointer in the win.

The Mustangs, 15-5 for the year, were down 14-13 after a period, but moved in front 23-21 by intermission. Homestead dominated Gunn 20-10 in the third quarter and 14-9 in the fourth to roll to the 17-point victory.

In other local action, Fremont dropped a 41-39 heartbreaker to Palo Alto to slip to 5-4 in De Anza Division play. The Lady Birds are 12-9 for the year.

Daynelle Parker tossed in 15 points to lead all Fremont scorers, and Katrina Ison had two three-pointers among her 10 points.

    Wrestling

Eight straight wins, five of them by fall, sparked the Fremont wrestling team to a lopsided 60-9 win over Monta Vista last week.

The win helped the Firebirds improve to 3-2 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL with just one match left to wrestle. Fremont will host Cupertino (4-1) on Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m., to close out the dual match season. A Fremont win would leave the Firebirds tied for second in the division with Cupertino. Los Gatos is 5-0 and has already clinched the dual match championship.

All of the teams in the SCVAL will converge on the Wilcox mats on Feb. 10 for the league finals. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for the evening. Junior varsity league finals will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilcox.

Amantha Hordagoda got Fremont off to a good start against Monta Vista last week with a 3-0 win at 105 pounds.

The Firebirds lost the next bout, but then ran off eight straight wins to take command of the match.

Chris Osian and Kai Garcia posted back-to-back pins for the Firebirds. Osian won by fall in the second round at 121 pounds, then Garcia pinned in the second at 127.

Alvin Cacdac rolled to an 11-2 major division at 132 pounds and Bayardo Sanchez won by forfeit at 137.

Luke Tran pinned in just 14 seconds at 142 pounds before senior sensation Anthony Baza tossed a solid Paul Montanez of Monta Vista around for a 22-6 technical fall at 147 pounds.

Jesse Huro and Daniel Atondo finished off the string of eight straight wins for Fremont with a couple of first-round pins. Huro pinned in just 22 seconds at 154 pounds and Atondo pinned in 43 seconds at 162.

Monta Vista claimed its second win of the night at 173 pounds, but that was all the Matadors could manage.

After a forfeit win at 191 pounds and a double forfeit at 217, Donyell Johnson capped the night with a pin at 277 pounds for Fremont. Johnson pinned 50 seconds into the second round.
