City post office launches consumer protection week

The Sunnyvale post office is partnering with the postal inspection service this year to launch the third annual National Consumer Protection Week, Feb. 5-11.

This year's campaign focuses on educating consumers about mail fraud schemes. The postal inspection service receives about 75,000 mail fraud complaints each year.

During National Consumer Protection Week, representatives from the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators, Federal Trade Commission, National Consumer's League, Department of Justice, AARP and the National Association of Attorneys General are joining forces to help promote consumer protection and awareness efforts involving mail fraud schemes.

On Feb. 8, at the Sunnyvale Post Office, 580 N. Mary Ave., members of the postal service's consumer affairs office will be in the lobby to share with consumers actions they can take to prevent from being a victim of consumer fraud. Representatives will be at the post office from 9 a.m. to noon to provide information to consumers.

This year's campaign addresses some of the top mail fraud schemes: advance fee loans, prizes or sweepstakes, charity frauds, failure to render merchandise or services and employment schemes where advertisements claim high-paying government jobs.

Customers can visit the postal inspection service website at www.usps.com/postalinspectors to view preventive tips and to obtain mail fraud complaint forms. For more information about National Consumer Protection Week visit the NCPW website at www.consumer.gov/ncpw.

Walker invites Sunnyvale residents to join him in his city hall office on Mondays, between 4 and 5 p.m. and Thursdays, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. To make an appointment, call his secretary at 408.730.7473, or simply drop by during the specified times.

Boy Scouts of America celebrating anniversary

In celebration of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, the Boy Scouts of Santa Clara County are putting on a fair for the community to show what Scouting is all about. On Feb. 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., troops in Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Saratoga will be demonstrating cooking, camping, first aid, knot tying and many other Boy Scout activities. Each troop will present their exhibit in the location where they normally meet and the community is invited to come visit the troops at their exhibit locations to learn more about them. For more information about Scouting and to help you find a particular Scout troop, call 408.280.5088.

    Ernie Bakin Honored

During the Jan. 30 Sunnyvale City Council meeting, Department of Public Safety (DPS) Chief Ernie Bakin, along with Mayor Jack Walker and the rest of the city council, honored Public Safety Officer Jeff Schlesinger for his role in saving the life of a visitor from Korea

On Jan. 12, 2001, the 50-year-old male visitor from Korea was returning to his hotel when he went into cardiac arrest. Officer Jeff Schlesinger responded to the 911 call for service in his police car. Once on the scene, Officer Schlesinger applied an automated external defibrillator (AED) and restored the patient's cardiac rhythm. The patient was later transferred to El Camino Hospital and has since been released in good health, returning home to Korea.

This "save" with an AED represents the 16th person who has been successfully resuscitated by the Sunnyvale DPS since the department implemented it's AED program in 1994.
