Barnes, Miller clinch Dons victories

Kristie Barnes and Jenny Miller combined for nearly 60 points and eight three-pointers to lead the De Anza Community College women's basketball team to back-to-back wins over Chabot and Cabrillo in Coast Conference play last week.

Barnes poured in 19 points and Miller added 13 in a 60-42 win over Cabrillo, and Miller hit 14 points and Barnes popped 11 in a 99-51 win over Chabot.

Barnes drilled three three-pointers on her way to the 19 points against Cabrillo. Miller drained a pair of threes to join Barnes in double digits with 13 points.

Kam Simpson supported with six points, Donalyn Marchi added five, Aisha Sullivan and Leslie Brown hit four apiece, Kay Jackson popped a three-pointer and Selena Miller, Iisha Coleman and Lori Alvarez added two each.

Earlier in the week, Sullivan fired in 17 points to lead all De Anza scorers in the win over Chabot. J. Miller and Jackson each hit a couple of threes and finished with 14 points apiece, and Barnes had a three among her 11 points.

Simpson finished in twin figures with 10 points, Kerri Reese had nine, Marchi eight, Alvarez six, S. Miller and Shelly Savage four apiece, and Brown two.

The Dons improved to 9-1 in the conference and 16-10 for the year with the two wins. De Anza will visit Ohlone on Feb. 7, 7 p.m., before hosting San Jose on Feb. 9, 5:30 p.m.

The De Anza men, meanwhile, dropped an 86-76 conference decision to Chabot despite a 17-point effort by Chris Shoemaker.

The 6-foot-1 guard buried five three-pointers on his way to the 17-point night. Mario Baca and Scott Beamish each drilled four threes to finish with 12 points apiece and Harold Bordenave added 12 points.

Nick Glover had a three among his seven points and Jolan Steverson hit a couple of threes to finish with six points. Lance Fastusi added five points, Jebraun Jones had three and Glenn Dionne hit two.

The loss left the Dons 0-6 in conference play and 5-17 for the year. De Anza will visit Foothill on Feb. 7 and host West Valley on Feb. 9 in a couple of 7:30 p.m. games.
