Peninsula rape suspect pleads 'not guilty'

Romel Reid on Friday pleaded not guilty in San Jose Municipal Court to 17 felony charges that include rape, attempted rape, kidnapping, assault and robbery.

Reid's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Stephen Elrick, requested a discovery hearing for next Friday. After the proceeding, Elrick said he needed to see all the ongoing police information regarding the crimes committed by the so-called Peninsula rapist.

Reid, a 25-year-old East Palo Alto resident, is accused of raping at least five women, including one in Sunnyvale, between August and January.

Judge Jamie Jacobs-May set the discovery hearing for Feb. 9 at
1:30 p.m.

Hobee's plans March opening in Sunnyvale

Coffeecake lovers, take note: Taber Food Services Inc. on March 1 plans to open a Hobee's restaurant at 800 Ahwanee Ave., near Mathilda Avenue and Highway 101.

Ed Fike, the company's vice president and general counsel, said the 4,000-square-foot restaurant would have opened sooner, but the company is waiting for construction to be completed at the nearby Motel 6.

"The location is a nice fit for us. The building has lots of windows and is a very open restaurant," Fike said.

He added that the location is also ideal because of its freeway access and proximity to high-tech firms.

Hobee's will employ 45 to 50 people, he said.
