Big wins for Homestead teams
Girls top Lancers, boys beat Falcons
By Dick Sparrer
Every win is sweet for a high school basketball team.
But the Homestead girls and boys basketball teams each posted victories last week that were just a bit sweeter than the rest.
The Homestead girls pulled out a thrilling 33-30 victory over first-place St. Francis last week to create a tie atop the pack in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And the Homestead boys upset Saratoga 64-59 to deal the Falcons a severe blow in their quest for a championship in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
Both Homestead victories avenged losses to the same clubs earlier in the league season.
Mustangs top Lancers
Homestead had lost to St. Francis on the first trip through the De Anza Division schedule, and a second loss last week would have all but dashed any hopes the Mustangs might have had of winning a league championship.
But a loss just wasn't in the cards for the Mustangs.
Senior guard Vickie Chiang buried 13 points to lead Homestead to the key win over the Lancers. Marie Levey, Tanya Green and Chris Strombel chipped in with five points each.
The Mustangs trailed 11-8 after a period but grabbed a 17-16 lead by intermission, then they fought back from a 22-21 deficit after three periods to win it in the fourth.
Homestead is now 8-1 in the division and 16-6 for the year. The Lancers slipped to 7-1 in division play and to 18-4 for the season.
The Mustangs had opened the week with a thrilling 51-45 double-overtime win over Gunn. The score bounced back and forth with Gunn leading 12-8 at the first buzzer, Homestead on top 20-17 at the half, and the Mustangs up just 30-28 after three quarters. Gunn tied it in regulation and the clubs matched buckets in a 2-2 overtime before the Mustangs topped the Titans 8-2 in the second OT.
Julia Randall poured in 18 points, including eight free throws, to lead all Homestead scorers in the win. Chiang joined her in double digits with 12 points.
Levey supported with eight points in the win and Green and Strombel added six points apiece.
Homestead tops 'Toga
The Homestead boys came out of nowhere to upset Saratoga 64-59 last week.
The Falcons were just a game behind Lynbrook in the race for first place in the El Camino Division, and the Mustangs were reeling from a 44-25 loss to the Vikings.
But sophomore guard Brad Sasaki came through with 17 points and senior forward Trenton Hill tossed in 13 more to lead the Mustangs to the upset win over the Falcons.
Robbie Hoffman joined the two in twin figures with 10 points. Hoffman popped a pair of three-pointers and Hill hit one.
Taylor Carpenter canned nine points, Ramont Thomas hit eight, Garren Strong had five and John McLaughlin added two to round out the scoring for the Mustangs.
Homestead, just 3-6 in the division and 6-17 for the year, had lost to Lynbrook to open the week.
Sasaki topped the Mustangs with nine points, including a three. Carpenter, McLaughlin, Tom Bishop and Hafez Shahabi added four each.
Fremont falls
The Fremont girls lost twice last week, falling 51-31 to St. Francis and 45-41 to Santa Clara.
Monique Gammon dropped nine points and Shade Akandi added eight, but the Firebirds lost by 20 to St. Francis. Robin Glass supported with six points, Daynelle Parker hit four and Tiana Stroughter and Josie Wells had two apiece. Glass hit a pair of threes and Gammon popped one.
Fremont slipped to 3-6 in the division and to 15-8 for the year with the four-point loss to Santa Clara two days later.
Gammon topped the Lady Birds with 10 points and Wells added nine. Akanbi had eight points, Kristen Kam six, Parker four and Glass and Sara Harvey two each.
The Firebirds, who got off to such a brilliant start this season, need to win their final three games to finish at .500 in league play. The Lady Birds visit Palo Alto on Feb. 9, 7 p.m., and host Gunn on Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m., before closing out the regular season the following Thursday at home against Monta Vista.
Fremont wins, loses
The Fremont boys opened the week with a 49-39 loss to Saratoga, but fought back for a tight 35-33 win over Mountain View in El Camino play last week.
Jacob Esau and Cameron McNeil tossed in 11 points apiece in the win over the Spartans. Glenn Marasigan added five points, Jesse Enchill four and Devin Scott and Dominik Stewart two each. McNeil and Marasigan each popped a three.
Scott had buried 10 points to lead all Fremont scorers in the 10-point loss to Saratoga to open the week. Esau added eight points, Marasigan hit seven, Enchill five, McNeil four, Ryan Castro three and David Fernandez two.
King's splits
The girls at The King's Academy split last week in Private Schools League play after falling 41-35 to Kennedy in a nonleague game. The Knights beat Woodside Priory 59-44 before losing 47-38 to Mercy of San Francisco.
The King's boys also split in Private Schools League play. The Knights lost 63-54 to Fremont Christian but beat Woodside Priory 59-45 to improve to 4-6 in league and to 10-12 for the year.
Ryan Hazley poured in 28 points to lead the Knights to the win over Woodside. Hazley had three three-pointers among his eight field goals and he picked up nine points at the free-throw line.
Alex Ziegler supported with 11 points, Brian Zollweg and Jarod Monroe had seven points apiece, Aaron Scott hit four and Bill Dunaway had two.
Hazley and Ziegler bombed 17 points each, but the Knights lost to Fremont Christian. Monroe supported with 11 points in the game. Hazley popped three threes and Monroe hit two. Zollweg added five points and Brent Mitchell hit four.
