Mustangs hope to stay in the running

By DICK SPARRER

There was just one game last week for girls' basketball, at Homestead.

But there are two this week for the Mustangs, and they are big ones.

Homestead will visit Los Gatos on Feb. 11, 7 p.m., before hosting powerhouse St. Francis on Feb. 15, 3 p.m.

The Mustangs have to be careful against pesky Los Gatos to open the week, because they need the win to remain hot in the race in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

And the Mustangs need to do to St. Francis this week what they did to Monta Vista a couple of weeks back--pull off something of an upset win.

Monta Vista and St. Francis are cruising along in the driver's seat in the division, but Homestead is hot in the race with a 6-2 division record.

The Mustangs, 18-3 for the year, claimed that sixth league win last week with a convincing 66-34 victory over Palo Alto.

Yumi Minn took over as the top scorer for the Mustangs in the win over the Vikings. Minn finished with a team-high 14 points, including a three-pointer.

Yvonne Chen supported with 12 points, Hilary Parker added 11 and Brie Ahern hit seven. Chen and Ahern each canned three-pointers.

Shelly Mellberg chipped in with six points, Erin Morikawa and Michele Wald added five apiece, and Kelly Hadden, Michiko Nakayama and Julie Speckels hit two each.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the game. Homestead led 15-4 at the first buzzer and 32-10 at the half. The Mustangs outscored Paly 23-9 in the third quarter to all but wrap up the victory.

Fremont girls lose

The Fremont girls, meanwhile, lost a pair of El Camino Division decisions last week, falling 43-36 to Saratoga and 37-27 to Milpitas.

Natalie Woo tossed in 11 points and Chi Tran added 10, but the Lady Birds lost in overtime by seven to the Falcons to open the week. Charlotte Salvacion and La-Nolia Ufondu hit six points apiece and Sarah List fired in a three-pointer.

Fremont fought from behind to outscore Saratoga 11-4 in the fourth quarter to tie the game 36-36 at the end of regulation. But the Lady Birds were outscored 7-0 in the extra period.

Tran came back with 13 points, but she was the only Fremont player able to score in twin figures in the 10-point loss to Milpitas.

Kim Johnson finished with four points and Sheila Hess had three. Wood, List and Ufondu hit two points each and Beatriz Corro had one.

The Lady Birds, now 3-7 in the division, will have their hands full this week when they visit Cupertino (7-3) on Feb. 11 and Mountain View on Feb. 13 in a pair of 7 p.m. games.

Firebirds beat Pioneers

The Firebirds knocked off Cupertino 50-33 in El Camino Division play last week.

Rich Lockmanese had a big night for the Firebirds in the win over the Pioneers. The 6-foot-5 senior center poured in a game-high 17 points to lead Fremont to victory.

Darren Lang joined Lockmanese in double digits with 10 points, including a three-pointer. Melvin Rabena, Jabbar Burton and Ben Skinner pitched in five points each, Tully Banta-Cain and Reynold Carlos had three apiece and Danny Douglas added two.
