Atondo leads Fremont to win over Wilcox
By Dick Sparrer
A win won't get the Fremont wrestling team the championship in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
But you can bet the Firebirds will be gunning for a victory nonetheless when they visit Monta Vista on Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m., for the final match of the league dual match season.
Cupertino and Los Gatos will meet for the league dual match crown on Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m., at Gatos. The two squads take matching 5-0 records into the big meet.
The Firebirds are 3-2 in the division and will finish no better or worse than third in the division. But Fremont would like nothing better than to finish the dual season with a 4-2 league record as they head into the league finals this Saturday at Gunn High School in Palo Alto. And the Firebirds could do just that with a win over Monta Vista on Tuesday.
Fremont ran its season record to 3-2 with a solid 38-22 win over Wilcox last week.
Fremont won eight of the 14 matches contested--four by fall--to pull out the win over the Chargers.
Daniel Atondo led the pin parade with a first-round fall at 162 pounds. The junior pinned with 18 seconds left in the first round.
Ernest Ancona pinned 24 seconds in the second round at 191 pounds for the Firebirds. Alvin Cacdac posted a second-round fall at 137 pounds and Josh Desherlia pinned in the second round at 154.
Senior standout Chris Osian rolled to a 13-1 major decision win at 127 pounds for Fremont, and Bayardo Sanchez blanked his foe 11-0 for a major decision win at 142.
Joseph Seo won 10-7 at 132 pounds and Art Ancheta won 10-5 at 173 to round out the list of Fremont winners.
De Anza Division records heading into matches this week include: Cupertino 5-0, Los Gatos 5-0, Fremont 3-2, Palo Alto 2-3-1, Wilcox 1-3-1, Monta Vista 1-4, Lynbrook 0-5.
In other local wrestling action last week, Homestead won a half dozen bouts, but lost a 41-28 decision to Milpitas to slide to 3-2 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.
Clark Chen topped the list of Homestead winners with a second-round pin at 147 pounds. Eric Matsuoka won a 19-9 major decision at 114 pounds.
Supporting the effort for the Mustangs were Arash Zahoory, a 6-4 winner at 121; Cliff Barclay, a 9-8 winner at 137; Nathan Baxter, a 12-2 winner at 162; and David Ramirez, a 4-0 winner at 277.
