AIDS symposium draws a crowd

By CRISTY SHAUCK

Attendance at the Feb. 8 AIDS symposium sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Sunnyvale exceeded organizers' expectations by nearly 150 people.

Symposium attendees included Sunnyvale Mayor Robin Parker, City Council members Pat Vorreiter and Jim Roberts, and local educators, healthcare professionals and concerned parents.

"We ordered 245 lunches," said Joe Hamilton, chairman of the symposium committee and associate superintendent of the Fremont Union High School District. "We were expecting about 100 people."

The Sunnyvale Main and Sunrise Rotary clubs covered the cost of the meals for local students involved in Interact, high-school service clubs affiliated with Rotary, so that they could attend the symposium, which was held at the Sunnyvale Hilton.

According to Rotarian Donn Wadley, any profits from the symposium will go toward future AIDS projects. Rotary expects to tally the proceeds within the next two weeks.
