West Valley Elementary students will hold a public meeting on Feb. 15 to address neighborhood concerns about the construction of an outdoor classroom on school grounds.
The classroom will consist of a group of five picnic tables located behind the large playground equipment near the newly planted redwood trees, said Roberta Bondelie, school principal.
The area will be used for science, art and "anything that's noisy or requires the use of water and messiness," Bondelie said.
About 15 first- through sixth-graders will lead the meeting. If the community accepts their proposal, the city will match the $2,000 the kids have raised to pay for the classroom. Construction could begin immediately, Bondelie said.
The children announced the meeting last week by hanging fliers on the doors of 100 adjacent properties. "If nobody comes, I'm going to consider that success," she said.
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room.
