Galano, Baza take-down league mat titles

    Fremont finishes second to Gatos

    By Dick Sparrer

It's been pretty obvious for many years how much tougher the De Anza Division is than the El Camino Division when it comes to wrestling in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

But if anyone needed proof of that fact, it was in the final standings at the SCVAL finals held last Saturday at Milpitas.

The top finishers in the standings were all teams from the De Anza circuit. Only host Milpitas failed to finish among the leaders, as six of the seven De Anza teams finished ahead of El Camino competitors.

Los Gatos, the dual match champions of the De Anza Division, topped the pack with 202 points. Fremont was second at 192 with Monta Vista (153) third, Los Altos (130) fourth, Cupertino (101) fifth and Wilcox (95) sixth.

Individual champions Arturo Galano and Anthony Baza sparked the Firebirds to a team second at the tournament. Galano won a title at 112 pounds and Baza was the champion at 135.

The two topped a list of eight Fremont wrestlers to reach the championship finals. Nailing seconds for the Firebirds were Chris Osian at 103, Steven Knight at 119, Kai Garcia at 125, Chris Healy at 145, Gilbert Sanchez at 152 and Leo Saenz was third at 171. Jesse Huro was third at 140.

Champs Jarrod Rothman (125), Daniel Puder (215) and Kyle Kingsbury (275) sparked Monta Vista to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Billy Bybee supported with a second-place finish at 140 pounds for the Matadors with Tryg Koren third at 189, Paul Montanez fourth at 145 and Norman Hsieh fourth at 152.

Joe Conley (160) and Nick Iden (171) were each individual champions for Cupertino at the league meet.

Four other Pioneers managed fourth-place efforts, including Rory Conley at 103, Anthony Nguyen at 119, Daniel Lebus at 135 and Matt Perry at 189.

Lynbrook's Robert Lee was a champion at 130 pounds for the Vikings.
