Council approves 126-room hotel

Studio West Hotel Co. has gotten the green light to build a 126-room hotel at 748 N. Mathilda Ave. to provide temporary housing for corporate employees visiting or moving to Sunnyvale.

In approving the hotel Feb. 10, the Sunnyvale Planning Commission also required the Marin County developer to install substantial artwork on the hotel grounds. The design will be presented later, said representatives for the developer.

The company said its units meet the needs of price-conscious corporations. The units will have kitchens, computers, radios, televisions, linen and silverware.

Work on the $8 million hotel is scheduled to start in May or June and is expected to be completed by next February, said Jim Hansen, vice president of development for the company.

The four-story project, called the Candlewood Studio Hotel, will occupy about two acres and consist of 48 suites and 78 studios.

Rents will range from $65 to $85 a day, Hansen said.

The project, located near San Aleso Avenue, will be near some homes, but residents didn't lodge any objections to it, according to the city's planning department.
