Sunnyvale gets new assistant to the city manager

Sunnyvale City Manager Robert LaSala appointed Aretha Ferrell-Brown as assistant to the city manager, filling the vacancy created by the departure of Dan Rich last July. Ferrell-Brown was formerly deputy chief of staff at the Chicago Public Housing Authority and will join the city of Sunnyvale on Feb. 19.

Ferrell-Brown has more than 10 years of experience in federal, state and local government management. Prior to joining the Chicago Housing Authority, she served as assistant chief information officer for the city of Chicago's Department of Business and Information Services. She also held positions in the District of Columbia and Maryland state government. She holds a master of arts in public administration from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

The assistant to the city manager's responsibilities include coordinating staff on a wide variety of assignments, coordinating the analysis of proposed legislation and preparing legislative strategies, monitoring city-sponsored initiatives and conducting research to advise the executive leadership team.

    Council expands community outreach

A new city of Sunnyvale outreach effort will make it easier for residents and community groups to share their views with elected officials in the city. Upon request, council members will attend meetings of neighborhood associations and

other community groups to learn more about resident opinions on city and neighborhood issues.

For more information about the outreach effort, contact Lorna Dejillo with neighborhood and community services at 408.730.7489 or email ldejillo@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us.

Parking ambassador program begins for downtown visits

Visitors to downtown Sunnyvale will have access to new downtown parking ambassadors, who will answer questions and direct drivers to convenient parking.

Seventy-five parking spaces formerly reserved for valet parking are become available, bringing an end to the complimentary valet parking program.

Downtown Sunnyvale is the site of several major construction projects and the developer of three downtown office buildings will sponsor the ambassadors, who will be placed at key intersections and walk through downtown during busy times to help visitors and shoppers in the downtown area. Their first assignment will be to help direct traffic and parking around a large crane that will temporarily close some streets in the Town & Country Village for a few months.
