It's a competition that offers an all-expense paid weekend getaway as the grand prize.

But that getaway will be to Stockton of all places. Fans, though, will be amazed just how hard competitors will work to win that two-day trip.

They can win it by placing high enough at the Central Coast Section wrestling championships this weekend. And the trip? Well, it's to the State Tournament set for March 2-3 at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

The top four placers in each weight class advance to the state meet, and it's an honor just to make trip. But, then, it's quite an accomplishment to place that high at the section level.

Wrestlers will be trying to do just that when the compete at the CCS finals Feb. 23-24 at Independence High School in East San Jose. Only the top placers from league tournaments held over the past two weeks advance to the CCS event.

Fremont will send a contingent of nine wrestlers to the section tournament, led by Santa Clara Valley Athletic League champions Anthony Baza, Chris Osian, Kai Garcia and Alvin Cacdac.

Baza, a defending CCS champion, won the 147-pound league title at the SCVAL tournament on Feb. 10. Osian, a fourth-place finisher at CCS last year, was a league champ at 114 with Garcia first at 127 and Cacdac first at 132.

The four will be joined by teammates Joseph Seo (121), Bayardo Sanchez (137), Luke Tran (142), Jesse Huro (154) and Daniel Atondo (162) at CCS.

Homestead's Chris Chen (147) and Neal Cornell (154) have also qualified for CCS.

    Fremont unbeaten

It was just another win for the Fremont boys basketball team, or was it?

The Firebirds came on in the second half for a come-from-behind 47-44 win over Homestead last week. And it was that win that pushed Fremont to a 12-0 record in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Troy Tulowitzski pumped in 20 points and Jacob Esau added 13 to lead the Firebirds to the important win. Tulowitzski hit a pair of three-pointers among his seven field goals on the way to the 20-point effort.

Jesse Enchill supported with six points, Glenn Marasigan had four and Ryan Castro and Scott Phelps had two points each in the win.

Brad Sasaki tossed in 16 points, including a couple of threes, to lead all Homestead scorers in the loss. John McGaughlin supported with 12 points for the Mustangs, Garren Strong had eight, Gus Gauntlett five and Taylor Carpenter three.

The Firebirds are now 20-6 for the year.

    Mustangs, Firebirds fall

The Homestead girls opened the CCS Division I soccer tournament with an impressive 2-0 win over Menlo-Atherton, but the Mustangs were eliminated in the quarter-final round 1-0 by Aptos last Saturday. The Mustangs ended the year with a 12-6-4 season record.

Freshman midfielder Katie Wilcox scored off a Laura Phan assist to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at the half against M-A, then junior midfielder Aliza Ebert added an insurance goal in the second half to help Homestead clinch the first-round win.

Phan, a senior forward, had the assist on Ebert's goal, too.

The Fremont boys soccer team lost in the first round of the CCS Division I tournament, dropping a 2-0 heartbreaker to Serra. The Firebirds finished the year 11-4-4.
