Mustangs, Pioneers still alive in CCS

The Homestead and Cupertino girls soccer teams finished one-two in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this winter.

Now the two local squads are hoping to finish one-one.

Both the Mustangs and the Pioneers qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs, and both are battling for championships--Homestead in Division I and Cupertino in Division III.

The Mustangs opened the CCS event with a rousing 7-0 win over King City, and the Pioneers blanked York 1-0 to advance in Division III.

Tatiana Gusmao and Tiffany Colen will now lead the Homestead girls in the CCS semifinals set for Feb. 24, 2:30 p.m., at West Valley Community College in Saratoga. The Mustangs will put their 15-1-4 season record on the line when they face Gunn. The Titans are 14-6-1 after opening the playoffs with wins over Oak Grove (5-2) and No. 1 seed Menlo-Atherton (1-0).

Gusmao and Colen have been the top scorers for the Mustangs all season long, along with Laura Phan and Lisa Massey. Katrien Brak, Christina Ignacio, Katie Morgan and Kelly Winnovich have also been key offensive players for Homestead.

The winner of the semifinal game on Wednesday advances to the CCS Division I championship game on Feb. 27, 3 p.m., at San Jose PAL Stadium. Live Oak and St. Francis collide in the other semifinals game.
