    Special Olympics

The spring season is about to begin for the Santa Clara County Special Olympics, and coaches and volunteers are needed. Practice begins in March for track and field, swimming, tennis and golf.

A volunteer orientation meeting will be held March 9, 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office, 5730 Chambertin Drive in San Jose. For more information, call 267-2734.

    Wilhelm returns

Former olympic wrestler Bruce Wilhelm will return to place where it all began as one of the special guests at the Fremont High School winter awards night on Feb. 24, 7 p.m., in the school cafeteria.

Fremont has been honoring its stars of the past with special banners that hang in the gymasium, and Wilhelm will be among those athletes to be honored this week.

Through the early 1970s, there was no state wrestling tournament, so the wrestling ended with a NorCal event.

Wilhelm went on after his success on the mat to win the state shot-put title for Fremont later in 1963. From there, he advanced to the Olympics and later competed in the Strong Man competition.

    Soccer tryouts

The De Anza Impact will hold Class 1 (select) tryouts for the under-11 and under-12 girls teams on Feb. 27-28, 1-3 p.m., at Eaton Elementary School, Farallone Drive in Cupertino. For more information, call 378-5934, or email mtwhalen@earthlink.net.
