Dolphins win State Cup
Clark Barclay and Dustin Realini turned out to be heroes for the De Anza Dolphins in the CYSA State Association Cup soccer finals--and rather unlikely heroes at that.
The Dolphins, a boys' under-14 Demling Soccer Division 3 team, advanced to the finals of the State Cup tournament by winning the sectional title. But they entered the finals without their starting goalie, Paul Niedemier.
So the Dolphins called on Barclay to step into the net. And the backup goalkeeper was nothing short of outstanding.
He shut out the Modesto Quake through regulation and battled through a shootout in the first game, then blanked the unbeaten Rancho Cordova Silver Bullets through two overtimes and a shootout to help the Dolphins clinch the title.
And it was Realini, a defender, moving up to score the deciding goals in each of the two shootouts for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins went up against the Silver Bullets in the title game. The Bullets took a 45-0 record into the game.
Goals by Brian Ketner and Epindencio helped the Dolphins fight the Bullets to a 2-2 tie.
After two scoreless overtimes, the state championship went down to a shootout. Barclay blocked the first two attempts by the Bullets, then Realini stepped up and knocked a shot inside the left post to give the Dolphins the championship.
