Sunnyvale to host NY firefighter
By Jana Seshadri
Sunnyvale will be one of 300 cities across the country that will host and honor a special guest next month as part of a nationwide program, "Cities Unite America and Thank New York Firefighters." From March 1 to 3, the city will play host to a New York firefighter and organize a weekend of activities, including sightseeing trips, as a way of expressing gratitude and appreciation to the New York Public Safety Department, said Dori Fontaine, community services officer in Sunnyvale's crime prevention unit.
One portion of the weekend activity will be a firehouse pancake breakfast on March 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Sunnyvale Fire Station 2, located at 795 E. Arques Ave. at the intersection of Wolfe Road. Breakfast, which will be supervised by a semi-celebrity chef, will include pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. The firefighter will arrive at 9 a.m., said Linda Bagneschi, communications officer for the city of Sunnyvale.
Breakfast donations are suggested at $5 per adult and $3 per child for the public, Bagneschi said. Proceeds from the breakfast event will assist New York's Public Safety survivors of Sept. 11.
Besides the food, there will be public safety demonstrations with patrol cars and fire engines on display, Fontaine said. Local "celebrities," including Irwin Bakin, chief of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, will attend the event, she said.
According to Bagneschi, the community event is open to the public, and the city hopes that it will attract many families and children. For more information about the event, call 408.730.7140.
