Atondo wins CCS title, heads to state with Cacdac, Osian

    By Dick Sparrer

    California, here they come!

Daniel Atondo, Alvin Cacdac and Chris Osian of Fremont are headed to the California State Wrestling Tournament after placing at the Central Coast Section finals held last weekend at Independence.

Atondo finished first at 160 pounds for the Firebirds with Cacdac second at 130 and Osian third at 119 to lead Fremont to a 12th-place finish at the CCS tourney and to qualify for the state tournament set for March 1-2 at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Atondo breezed to five straight wins to take the section title at 160 pounds. He clinched the crown with a convincing 11-2 win over Sergio Anaya of North Monterey County in the finals.

The Fremont senior opened the tourney with third-round pins against Eric Eriksen of Santa Cruz and Josh Sahlstrom of Soquel. Atondo pulled out a tight 3-1 win over Jonny Chang of St. Francis, then beat Jakub Kacpryznski of Monterey 11-2 to advance to the finals.

Cacdac won four straight bouts to get into the title match at 130 pounds, but lost a tough 8-4 nod to Ron Raquinio of Santa Teresa in the fight for the championship.

Cacdac beat Justin Nance of Leland by technical fall to open the tourney, then handled Isahi DeTrinidad of Oak Grove 14-3, Armando Polomo of Bellarmine 10-6 and Dustin Hendersen of Live Oak 10-5 to get to the finals.

Only a tough 3-1 loss to eventual champion Marcus Pettis of Alvarez kept Osian from reaching the finals.

Osian opened with a tech fall win over Daniel Ho of Half Moon Bay, then beat Phillip Lynam of Los Altos 9-3 and Brian Kelsey of San Benito 8-3 before losing to Pettis. Osian fought back to take Rohaum Raji of Serra 7-1 and Evan Cooper of Live Oak 6-5 to clinch third.

The three placers pushed the Pioneers into the top 15 in the team standings, just a couple of points out of the top 10. Greenfield was eighth with 86 points followed by Half Moon Bay in ninth at 84.
