De Anza men open conference at home
The Coast Conference season begins this week for the De Anza Community College men's baseball team.
The Dons, 7-3-1 in the preseason, were to open at home against Cañada College on Feb. 28, 2 p.m., before visiting Skyline on March 2, 2 p.m. De Anza is back home on March 4 to host Cabrillo in a noon game.
De Anza is coming off a 5-0 win over the College of the Redwoods in the first round of the De Anza Tournament. Sophomore righthander Tony Righetti (Bellarmine) went the distance to get the win in the rain-shortened game. The De Anza hurler allowed just one hit over five innings.
Richard Rodrigues (Homestead) cracked a two-run homer to key a four-run rally in the third, and Brad Hardtke (Leland) drove in two runs with a pair of hits. Keith Ivicevich also had two hits in the win.
A week earlier the Dons two-timed Solano and Napa in the Napa Tournament. De Anza beat Solano 8-1 and edged Napa 4-3.
Jeff Martin (Pioneer) went six strong innings to get the win against Solano. The southpaw was touched for just two hits in his stint.
Ivicevich homered for the Dons and Mark Obenour (St. Francis) had two hits. Hardtke, Steve Carrieri (Homestead) and Rick Wiens (Pioneer) each doubled for the Dons.
Righetti was the winning pitcher against Napa and Tim DeHart (Cupertino) came on to pick up the save. Hardtke doubled and singled twice for the Dons and Frank Passanisi had three hits. Ivicevich singled and doubled and Lou Soria (Homestead) slapped a pair of singles.
