    Council supports recommended ballot measures

After discussion and debate focusing prmarily on Proposition 45 and Measure E, council members voted to support the staff-recommended state and county ballot measures on Feb. 26, with Councilman John Howe abstaining from voting.

However, before the final vote, Councilman Tim Risch offered a friendly amendment--to support both Measure E--not on the staff-recommended list--and Proposition 45.

Risch said many Sunnyvale residents attend Mission College, and the city should support the measure, which would provide a bond for upgrading the college facilities.

Council members Manuel Valerio, Pat Vorreiter and Jack Walker disagreed, arguing that it is not incumbent upon the city to support it since the college is not under the city's jurisdiction. The council decided not to support either Proposition 45 or Measure E.

Risch opened the discussion on Proposition 45--a 'no position' staff recommendation--and moved to oppose it, which would allow voters to permit their incumbent legislator to run for re-election and serve a maximum of four years beyond their term.

"We have term limits in the city," Risch said. "It allows for greater diversity, greater turnover and new ideas in the state level."

Councilman Walker did not agree with Risch and felt that voters should decide the issue.

Howe said it's not appropriate for the city to be supporting any of the ballot measures and abstained from voting on the issue.

    Water district changing treatment method

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is temporarily changing the treatment method used to treat water supplies for the California Water Service Company's Los Altos District. The change will begin March 4 and last for about a week. During this period, customers might notice a chlorine taste or smell in the water, which can be reduced by overnight refrigeration.

Cal Water's Los Altos District provides water service to 57,000 customers residing in parts of Cupertino, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and all of Los Altos. Cal Water customers who have questions can call 650.917.0152.
