Speak Out
Property owners' behavior frightening
This letter is to respond to the reaction of property owners who were outwardly angered at the City Council vote to allow the Emergency Housing Consortium in their neighborhood on Acalanes Drive (The Sun, Feb. 23). I was absolutely appalled to read of their violent reaction to the decision.
Property values decline? Have any of them recently visited their properties in the area? The property at 167 Acalanes is currently in huge distress.
The people who will be living in the EHC are usually those who want to contribute to a better lifestyle and a better society for themselves and their families. As for keeping up appearances, I'm sure they will have much pride in the fact they are able to provide for their families, and want to care for their homes and the surrounding building.
Helen Young was quoted as saying, "Why are they homeless? Because maybe they have bad habits." Does Ms. Young know how expensive rent is in this area? If an abused wife decides to finally leave her husband, chances are she will not make enough money to support them, so should she and the kids have to live in an overcrowded shelter that will turn them out when it's full? If a family has struggled through chemical dependency of a parent, who is now clean and trying to get back on track, should the family be forced to live on the streets?
These property owners' attitudes scare me. I hope they don't press their feelings onto the new tenants. How about giving this place a chance?
