City receives park, scoreboard as gifts
Farrell Field, the baseball field at Sunnyvale Middle School, will soon have an electronic scoreboard.
Sunnyvale Southern Little League on March 5 gave a $5,000 gift to the city for a scoreboard in the name of Bill Calvert, an avid supporter and coach of baseball in Sunnyvale.
Calvert died suddenly in October, and his family requested that any donations go to a memorial fund for Sunnyvale Southern. The league chose to spend the money on improving the field at Sunnyvale Middle School. Through a partnership agreement with the school, the city is responsible for maintaining the field.
Shelter closes
The National Guard Armory in Sunnyvale will offer its last night of shelter on March 14.
Maury Kendall of the Emergency Housing Consortium said the shelter, which houses homeless men and women each night, is normally open from November through March.
Kendall said the winter 1996-97 season marks an end to the state-authorized emergency shelter program at National Guard armories. The consortium is working to open a year-round emergency shelter program and transitional living facility in 1997 to address the ongoing need for shelter in Santa Clara County.
