Karen Postel, 65, longtime FUHSD literature teacher
Karen Postel of Mountain View died at home on March 4, at age 65. Postel taught reading and literature to students in the Fremont Union High School District for more than 25 years.
She was born on July 6, 1935, in Chicago, Ill. She attended Stevens College in Columbia, Mo., and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in economics in 1957.
After graduation, Postel moved from Michigan to San Francisco, where she worked for Merrill Lynch, before deciding to teach business courses. After discovering that many of her students could not read what they were typing, she attended San Francisco State University to earn the credentials needed to teach remedial reading in 1965.
Postel is survived by her sister, Barbara Postel Magerfleisch, of South Bend, Ind.; her aunt, Dorothy Kummer Vallier, of Mequon, Wis.; and her nieces, Marilee Hanson of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Sandra Magerfleisch of London.
A memorial service will be held on March 18, at 11 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 804 E. El Camino Real, Mountain View. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were made by the Mountain View Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries, Mountain View.
