Menace third at State Cup tourney

The MVLA Menace, a girls under-12 Class 1 soccer team from the Foothill Youth Soccer League, finished third at the California Youth Soccer Association-North Snickers State Cup tournament.

The Menace, a select team made up of girls from Sunnyvale, Los Altos and Mountain View, opened the 43-team tourney with wins over Davis Phoenix (2-0) and Bay Oaks (1-0) to advance to the quarterfinals. Despite a cold, driving rainstorm, the locals beat the Walnut Creek Lightning 2-0 in the quarters.

The Menace lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Bullard Magic of Fresno in the semifinals. The Magic went on to lose 2-0 to the Mustang Blast of Danville in the championship game, and the Menace finished in a third-place tie with Ajax United Sting of Modesto.

Sunnyvale's Brianna Yarber, Rachelle Yarber, Michelle Gradau and Katie Watterson were members of the Menace squad along with Mireille Delbecq, Elsa Erazo, Maggie Harrelson, Chelsea Muir, Sarah Nolet, Annie Olander, Hannah Purkey, Ariel Rogers, Danielle Spence, Faith Tucker and Laura Weiden. The Yarber sisters are the daughters of Sunnyvale natives, Vickie and Don Yarber.

The Menace is coached by Ross Ireland, who is assisted by Michael Weber-Grabau. The squad is the current champion in the District 2 Premier Youth Soccer League, which includes Santa Clara, San Mateo, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties.

The MVLA Menace will hold tryouts March 17-18. For more information on the squad, or to register for the tryouts, call team manager Todd Rogers at 650.949.4055 or e-mail mvlamenace@aol.com.
