White drives to victory

Mel White of the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department won the low gross title at the annual Northern California Firefighters Golf Championships held recently at the Silverado Country Club.

White, a 2-handicap who has been playing the game for just four years, shot a low 74 on Silverado South to claim the low gross title. He won the crown on the second hole of a sudden death playoff.

The Sunnyvale Public Safety Department team finished fifth overall in the 35-team four man best ball tournament.

Volleyvan in Los Gatos

The USA Volleyball Volleyvan will stop off at Los Gatos High School on March 21 for a day of free clinics for coaches and players.

The coaches' clinic will run from noon to 1 p.m., with the players clinic set for 1-4 p.m. Boys and girls ages 7-18 of all ability levels are welcome to attend the clinic.

The van is currently touring the country offering the free volleyball clinics. The staff from USA Volleyball will offer the instruction.

Youth football sign-ups

The Cupertino-Sunnyvale Pop Warner football organization will hold sign-ups for players ages 7-15 on April 18 and May 16, 9 a.m.-noon each day, at Fair Oaks Park in Sunnyvale. For more information, call 737-9654.

Girls' basketball camps

A series of girls' basketball camps will be held at Santa Clara University this summer with sessions starting June 6 through July 31. For more information, call Shaunice Warr at 554-4567.

Soccer tryouts

The MVLA Griffins, an under-13 girls' soccer team in the Ambrozino League, will hold tryouts for the upcoming season on March 21-22, 10 a.m.-noon each day, at Santa Rita School on Los Altos Ave. in Los Altos. The team is looking for serious, committed soccer players born after Aug. 1, 1985. For more information, call Dave at 1-650-949-2770.

Nothing But Net

Bud Ogden's Nothing But Net instructional basketball league spring season begins March 21 at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.

The league is open to boys and girls in grades 3-11, and games are played on Saturdays and Sundays at West Valley.
