Fremont's Mike Stahmer had a couple of solid rounds, but he couldn't help the Firebirds to a golf win last week.

Mustangs swim past Fremont

Melissa Westgate won a pair of events.

So did Kelly Pace and Megan Tipton.

The only difference was, the wins by Pace and Tipton sparked the Homestead girls' swimming team to a rousing 157-46 win over Fremont in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Pace cruised to a first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23.70 and took the 500 freestyle in 5:34.00, and Tipton took the 100 free in 59.66 and the 50 free in 27.48 to lead the Mustangs to the lopsided victory.

Pace and Tipton also helped Homestead to three relay wins in the meet.

The two were half of the winning 200 free relay team, teaming with Ellen Chang and Sue Studzinski to swim a 1:55.07.

Pace joined forces with Chang, Jennifer Hovey and Megan Avery for a win in the 400 free relay in 4:09.94, and Tipton combined with Avery, Catherine Allen and Hovey for a first in the 200 medley relay in 2:10.5.

Hovey added a victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.6.

Westgate starred for Fremont in the loss. The sophomore sensation breezed to wins in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.00 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.96.

Homestead improved to 2-0 in the division with the win.

Mustang boys win

The Homestead boys swamped Fremont 118-81 in El Camino action the same day.

Jeff Brooker, Dave Daines, Greg Studzinski and Greg Boggy teamed for a win in the meet-opening 200 medley relay in 1:55.17, and the Mustangs rolled from there to the win over the Firebirds.

Studzinski took the 200 IM in 2:14.53 and the 100 free in 53.54, Brooker won the 50 free in 24.85, Boggy was tops in the 100 fly in 1:11.02 and the 100 back in 1:05.73, and Hrsto Avgarski was a winner in the 100 breast in 1:12.65.

Studzinski, Brooker, Daines and Avgarski joined forces for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:37.78.

The Homestead boys, like the girls, improved to 2-0 in division competition.

Stahmer stars

Senior Mike Stahmer starred for Fremont, but the Firebirds lost a pair of golf decisions last week.

Stahmer carded a low 43, but Fremont lost 216-229 to Saratoga in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League action. Mike Benkoski fired a 44 the same day.
