Krause leads Mustangs to win over Fremont

Michelle Wagner is looking for her Fremont boys volleyball team to have a good season in 2002.

And in the early stages of the spring campaign, it's so far, so good for the Firebirds.

Fremont is 6-2 in the young season and the Firebirds have flown to a 2-0 start in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with wins over Wilcox and Santa Clara.

"We look forward to a good season," said Wagner of the '02 Fremonters. "We look forward to being able to compete more intensely with more teams this year."

Fremont boasts a half-dozen returners of the 2001 squad, including third-year varsity players Adam Colombo, Lance Lesui, Mike Parenteau and John Seo.

"We have quite a few returning players who worked hard last year to learn a new offensive and defensive system," said Wagner, back for her second season as the Fremont coach. "The guys did a lot of work last year to become better competitors and learn the dynamics of being a teammate."

Lesui and letterman David Evans are both returning all-leaguers for Fremont this spring. Randal Polgar is another varsity returner for the Firebirds.

Moving up from the junior varsity squad are first-year varsity players Nathan Wang, Mike Pullano, Joseph Seo and Sal Alvarez. Wang and Pullano were each all-leaguers at the JV level last spring.

Danny Mase is a newcomer to the Fremont program with one year of JV experience.

Despite their experience, the Firebirds still have just three seniors on the 2002 roster--Colombo, Parenteau and John Seo.

Wagner's Firebirds are coming off a 2-6 league finish and 9-11 record of a year ago, but the coach figures this year's club could climb into one of the top three sports in the division.

Fremont played two matches last week, losing a tough 16-18, 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 non-league decision to Leland before beating Santa Clara 15-3, 14-16, 15-7, 15-10 in a league match.

Colombo hammered down a team-high 12 kills in the win over the Bruins on Thursday. Lesui had 13 kills in the loss to the Chargers.

    Firebirds fall

The Fremont baseball team lost its only game last week, falling 12-0 to Gunn in De Anza Division play.

Javier Eredia and Jack Chapman each doubled, but Fremont could manage just four hits in the loss to the Titans on Friday. The loss dropped the Firebirds to 1-2 in league play.

Fremont will try to get back on the winning track with three league games this week. The Firebirds were to visit Los Gatos on Monday and will head to Saratoga on March 20, 3:30 p.m. Fremont returns home Friday to host powerhouse Wilcox at 3:30 p.m.

    Krause 3 over par

David Krause fired a three-over-par 38 to lead the Homestead golf team to a 160-169 win over Fremont in El Camino Division play last Tuesday at the Sunnyvale Golf Course.

Eric Domke was close behind Krause with a 39, Mark Mackay shot a 41 and Geoffrey Bazinett fired a 42.

Jason Simon carded a 38 to lead the Fremont effort.

Homestead, now 2-2 in division play, will play three matches this week. The Mustangs face Mountain View on March 19, 1 p.m., at Shoreline; host Cupertino on March 20, 1 p.m., at the Sunnyvale Golf Course; and visit Eagle Ridge on March 21, 12:45 p.m., for a non-league match.

Fremont, 1-2, came back after the loss to the Mustangs to beat Mountain View 157-168 at Sunnyvale Muni. Simon and David Chen each finished at two-over with 37s.

    Mustangs split

Matt Whiteman singled, doubled and homered to drive in three runs and lead the Homestead baseball team to a 10-6 win over Lynbrook last week in El Camino Division play.

Brad McGee was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs and he also tripled in the win. Chris McKim came on in relief to pick up his second save of the season.

The Mustangs lost 5-4 to Mountain View two days later to slip to 2-2 in league play and to 4-4 for the year.

Brian Maihack and Steve Hayes had two hits apiece for Homestead in the loss. Hayes singled and doubled.

    Girls softball

Karen Purdy doubled and singled to drive in three runs and also tossed a one-hitter to lead the Homestead girls softball team to a 13-3 non-league win over James Lick last week.

Laura Currier also drove in three runs for Homestead in the win and Ashley Walters knocked home a pair.

The Mustangs are now 2-3 for the season.

Fremont, meanwhile, pulled out a tough 8-7 win over Piedmont Hills in non-league play.

The Firebirds fought back from a 6-2 deficit with a five-run rally in the home half of the fifth. The Pirates tied it with a run in the top of the seventh, but Fremont won it with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Marcy Lovelace and Jessica Moore belted three hits apiece and Candice Stockhouse singled and doubled to knock in two runs. Shelly Jordan doubled home a pair of runs and Robin Glass was the winning pitcher for the Lady Birds.

Fremont is now 3-1 for the year.
