    Input encouraged for downtown plaza

    Sunnyvale residents and businesses are encouraged to attend a workshop to give input on the design of the downtown plaza. Envisioned as a community-gathering place, participants will review and discuss different city plaza design options. The workshop will be held March 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at the Historic Del Monte Building located at 100 S. Murphy Ave.

    The downtown plaza is a 1.6-acre site located in downtown Sunnyvale at the corner of Evelyn Avenue and Frances Street, across from the Caltrain station. It will function as a public open space for downtown residents, workers and customers. The plaza is one of several new developments under construction as part of a long-term plan to revitalize the downtown area.

    Hindu festival set for March 23-24

    The Hindu temple located at 420 Persian Drive in Sunnyvale will celebrate the spring festival "Holi," on March 23 and 24 with prayer services and other special activities. For more information, visit the temple's website at www.sunnyvaletemple.org or call 408.734.4554.

    Awards open for 2002 applicants

    The public is invited to enter the city of Sunnyvale's 2002 Environmental Achievement Awards contest by sending in an

    environmental protection story. Topics including anger management, conflict resolution skills, developing self-esteem, and effective discipline. Early signs of substance use or abuse will be included at future meetings, he said. Winners will be honored at the Sunnyvale City Council meeting on April 23.

    Residents are required to write their story on 8 1/2-by-11 paper--up to two pages--and include name, address and phone number on the front page. Age should be included if the resident is under 21. Entries can be mailed to City of Sunnyvale, Environmental Achievement Awards, P.O. Box 3707, Sunnyvale, CA 94088 or can be faxed to 408.734.2376. Entries are due by March 23.

    Childcare services educates on effects of violence

    Training on the effects of domestic violence on children is being sponsored by the city of Sunnyvale's Office of Childcare Services April 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Sunnyvale Library, Program Room A. The training is open to all childcare providers and teachers in Sunnyvale. Kathryn Williams, a state-certified domestic violence counselor, will be speaking about the types of domestic violence, signs, symptoms and effects of domestic violence on children, what to do if one suspects that a child is being exposed to domestic violence and how to approach the guardian or caregiver about the issue.
