    Positions open on advisory board

    The city of Sunnyvale has 16 vacancies on nine of the city's advisory boards and commissions for interested citizens, who would like to advise the city council on policy issues.

    Applicants are sought for the following: advisory to the Council on Aging, arts commission, board of building code appeals, board of library trustees, heritage preservation commission, housing and human services commission, parks and recreation commission, personnel board and planning commission.

    The deadline for applications is April 27, at 5 p.m. The council is scheduled to make its appointments in June. Recruitment information meetings will be held on April 2 and April 19, at 6 p.m. in the west conference room of city hall, 456 West Olive Ave.

    Applicants must be registered voters living in Sunnyvale. Current city of Sunnyvale employees and their relatives are not eligible for appointment.

    City to air public access programs

    On March 19, the city of Sunnyvale will launch a 12-month

    pilot program to air existing public-access programming on Cable Channel 60. Sunnyvale residents who are cable customers can view programming from four Sunnyvale producers on diverse topics, ranging from effective public speaking to how to build a positive, "can-do" attitude. The city is seeking feedback from viewers regarding their thoughts and opinions on Channel 60 public-access programming.

    Public-access is programming created by members of the general public who donate their time and energy to produce shows about topics that might interest the community. During the 12-month pilot phase, public access programming will feature four existing Sunnyvale producers, whose work meets the screening process established by the De Anza TV Center. The programming includes "Toastmasters on Television," which offers a variety of communication and leadership segments to help viewers become more effective speakers. "On the Move" is a series that promotes understanding, awareness and self-esteem of the physically challenged and assists the relatives and friends who support the disabled and people with special needs. A whimsical self-esteem building series, "Gustine Castle and You: helps viewers build a positive attitude. And "Those Videos" features a critique of music videos from a variety of genres, including R&B, hip-hop, jazz, pop and others.

    Each program runs for a half-hour, and the programs will be aired one after another starting Mondays at 4 p.m., Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Thursdays at 2 p.m., Fridays at 12 p.m., Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 2 a.m.

    The schedule is subject to change during the pilot program. Viewers are encouraged to share their thoughts and comments with the city of Sunnyvale.     At the end of the pilot program, staff will return to council with a progress report and recommendations for further consideration.
