King's gets off to a very royal start

    By Dick Sparrer

Kathryn Neufeld and Cecily Gordon helped make it a 6-0 start for the girls softball team at the King's Academy when they combined forces to lead the Knights to a 3-1 win over Menlo-Atherton last week.

But the winning stopped for King's a game later when the Knights lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Leland in eight innings at the Circle of Champions tournament at Twin Creeks.

Neufeld tossed a two-hitter and helped her own cause with a single and a double, but the Knights could manage just a single run in the second. Leland tied it in the sixth, then won it in the eighth.

Gordon ripped a double for King's only other hit in the game.

Earlier in the week, Neufeld tossed a three-hitter and Gordon singled and doubled in the win over M-A.

King's was coming off of a championship showing in the Modesto Tournament. Neufeld doubled and homered to drive in three runs in a 4-2 win over Modesto Christian in the championship game. She was also the winning pitcher.

Neufeld had tossed a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Lincoln of Stockton in the semifinals and a four-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over Linden in the quarterfinals. Gordon homered and singled in the win over Linden and Angela Guidi doubled and singled twice. Neufeld tripled and singled twice in the win.

King's opened the tourney with a 19-0 win over Capital Christian. Neufeld fired a no-hitter in the five-inning game and she also ripped a home run. Gordon tripled, doubled twice and singled, and Guidi, Carissa Threewitt and Amy Lau had two hits each.
