    Child care awards to be given

    In April, the City of Sunnyvale present awards to people, programs, or businesses, that have made an effort to address affordable, accessible, quality child care in Sunnyvale.

    Nominations for the "Mayor's 2000 Child Care Innovative Awards" may be submitted by anyone. Self-nominations are encouraged.

    Forms are available in the South Annex at City Hall, 456 West Olive Ave. Forms also may be downloaded from the city's website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/childcare.

    Submissions must be made by 5 p.m., on Friday, April 14. The awards will be presented at the Sunnyvale Council Meeting, on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m.

    Sunnyvale couple honored

    Willa and Gordon Markely have been recognized for their exemplary community service by the Regional Medical Center of San Jose. The Markelys were trained at the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse as volunteers at the Regional Medical Center as Twinkles and Sunny, the hospital clowns. In addition to their hospital service, the Sunnyvale residents volunteer extensively with the Centre for Living with Dying, Sunnyvale Community Services, Leadership Sunnyvale, and the Islam Shrine Temple. The Markleys were the city of Sunnyvale's Distinguished Citizens of the Year in 1999.

    Kiwanis Club, membership

    The Kiwanis Club of Sunnyvale will play host for its annual Membership Drive with a guest day on Thursday, March 31, at 12:15 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Lookout Inn at the Sunnyvale Gold Course. The club meets every Thursday at 12:15 p.m. at the Lookout Inn. For more information, call Peter Smith at 408.395.7900.
