Since 1975, Canine Companions for Independence, which holds classes at Premium Pet in Sunnyvale, has placed 1,500 dogs with people who have physical disabilities or impaired hearing. The program trains puppies to pick up dropped objects, switch on lights and perform other simple tasks. Just as importantly, the dogs provide companionship to people who might otherwise find themselves isolated because of disabilities.
