Safeway offers online services in Sunnyvale

    By Jana Seshadri

Sunnyvale residents can now shop for groceries and have them delivered without ever leaving their homes. On March 13, Safeway started offering online grocery shopping and delivery for most of Santa Clara County, including all of Sunnyvale.

"Sunnyvale residents will receive their groceries from the store located at 785 E. El Camino Real," said David Bowlby, director of public affairs for the Pleasanton-based Safeway chain.

Customers interested in ordering groceries from Safeway online need to go to www.safeway.com and register first, he said. Then by clicking on the "shop now" icon, they can begin shopping for groceries, which are arranged the same way they would be in a Safeway grocery store. Once registered, the address is checked to ensure delivery is available in that neighborhood, which is determined by ZIP codes.

An order placed online will cost $9.95, regardless of its size, and can be paid online by credit card, Bowlby said. If an order is placed before 10 a.m., it will be delivered the same day, he added. Otherwise orders will be delivered between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. the next day in a refrigerated Safeway vehicle, within a two-hour time slot selected by the customer.

The only items that will not be considered for delivery are flowers and prescription drugs, Bowlby said. Alcohol and tobacco items will be delivered only with an adult present at the address.

Safeway Online will capture the niche market previously filled by the failed Webvan.com. Whereas newcomer Webvan relied completely on its online service, Safeway already has an extensive infrastructure in place with 255 stores in Northern California, Bowlby said.

"We don't need large distribution centers, like Webvan did," he said. "The Safeway brand has been around for more than 70 years."
