PG&E gives rebate check to Sunnyvale

The city of Sunnyvale received a rebate check for $237,183.21 from PG&E at the March 19 city council meeting for a job well done. According to Dennis Ng, traffic engineer for the city of Sunnyvale, PG&E had an incentive program for the cities during the energy crisis last year, which called for retrofitting the city's traffic signals with energy efficient LED indications. The signals were previously fitted with incandescent bulbs, which used more energy. The stipulation was that the change had to be made by June 2001. Almost 98 percent of the traffic signals citywide have been retrofitted with the LED indications, Ng said. The rest of the signals, due to their design, cannot be changed, he said.

"This has been a very successful project," said Frank Arroyo from PG&E.

It has been good for the environment and good for the city, and overall, a win-win situation, he said. Another PG&E representative, Ben Mehta, said that Sunnyvale was quick to respond to the program.

"They have done the best," Mehta said.

Mehta and Arroyo presented the check to Sunnyvale Mayor Fred Fowler at the meeting.

Fire safety poster contest winners receive recognition

Winners of the 2002 fire safety poster contest, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyvale and the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, were awarded certificates and gifts by the judges and public safety officers at

the March 19 city council meeting. Children from kindergarten through fifth grade in Sunnyvale elementary schools participated in the contest.

"I was very impressed with all the kids," said Irwin Bakin, chief of Public safety. "Not just with their creativity, but also because they seemed to have gotten the message about fire safety."

The pictures portrayed scenes involving fire hazards. The importance of installing smoke alarms, how fire officers work to save lives, being careful with stoves and ovens while cooking, using fire extinguishers and how to deal with smoke were some of the issues dealt with in the pictures.

First, second and third place awards were given to kids in each grade level from kindergarten through fifth grades. There were two winners from Cherry Chase Elementary, one from Bishop, four from Vargas, four from Challenger, two from Fairwood, one from Nimitz, one from Stocklmeir, two from St. Cyprian and one from Ellis.
