Hardtke powers Dons in baseball

Brad Hardtke (Leland) ripped two doubles and a pair of singles to drive in four runs and lead the De Anza Community College baseball team to a rousing 14-11 win over Gavilan.

The Dons were trailing 8-6 before exploding for eight runs in the eighth. Southpaw Jeff Martin (Pioneer) picked up the win in a relief role. He's now 2-0 this spring.

Richard Rodrigues (Homestead), Steve Carrieri (Homestead) and Mike Gardner (Leland) each doubled and singled twice, and Max Childress (Homestead) had three hits. Childress and Carrieri knocked in two runs apiece.

Zach Gudahl (Bellarmine) and Joey Passanisi (St. Francis) had two hits each in the win.

The Dons, 15-7-1 for the year and 7-4 in the Coast Conference, had beaten San Jose City College 10-4 a few days earlier. Keith Ivicevich (Cupertino) and Lou Soria (Homestead) each singled and doubled and Hardtke had three hits. Passanisi drove in two runs and Tony Righetti (Bellarmine) went the distance to get the mound win. Righetti, now 3-2, struck out 13.

De Anza opened the week dropping a 15-7 nod to West Valley.

Ex-Indians star

Former Fremont baseball stars Jeff Canter, Ray Hutchison and Ken Fukumoto are now starring on the diamond at West Valley Community College.

Hutchison had six hits last week to lead the Vikings to three Coast Conference victories.

Hutchison doubled and homered to drive in three runs in West Valley's 15-7 win over De Anza. Fukumoto singled and homered to plate three runs and Canter drove in a pair.

Canter had four hits to knock in three runs and Fukumoto singled. doubled and homered to drive in four for West Valley in a 16-11 win over Skyline. Hutchison had two hits to knock in two runs.

Hutchison came back with two hits to spark the Vikings to a 5-1 win over Foothill on Saturday. West Valley is 17-7 for the year and 8-3 in conference play.
