Tulowitzski leads Fremont
Firebirds improve to 6-0 in division

It's difficult to determine whether Fremont's Troy Tulowitzski is tougher to get out than he is when he's getting outs.
Homestead had trouble figuring that out last week when Tulowitzski led the Firebirds to a 9-3 win over the Mustangs in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Tulowitzski ran his pitching record to 3-0 for the season when he tossed the Firebirds to the win over Homestead. He also helped his own cause at the plate with a double to drive in two runs.
His performance helped the 'Birds to the win that pushed their record to 6-0 in the division. Fremont is 6-6 for the year.
But Fremont got more than just a big game from Tulowitzski. Brandon Klein, Ron Cerda and Kyle Severns also came up big for the Firebirds in the Tuesday afternoon win.
Klein homered and singled to drive in a pair of runs for Fremont. Cerda ripped a pair of hits and Severns knocked in two runs.
The 'Birds jumped on Homestead early with two runs in the first and five in the second. They coasted from there to the victory.
Homestead battled back later in the week to the return to the win column with a tight 7-6 win over winless Palo Alto.
The Vikings took the early lead in the game with a run in the first and two more in the third. But Homestead tied it with three in the home half of the third, then jumped in front 7-3 with four runs in the fifth.
Paly fought back for three in the top of the seventh before right-hander Israel Trujillo retired the final hitter the save the game for the Mustangs.
Tim Strumbel was the winning pitcher for Homestead and Trujillo came on late to get the save.
Bryan Beres led an 11-hit attack for Homestead with three singles. Matt Whiteman and Chris Kidd had two hits apiece in the win and Gary Mullins roped a double. Trujillo and Bryan Silverman knocked in two runs apiece.
Homestead, now 4-2 in league play, will visit Los Altos on March 27 and host Santa Clara on March 29 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games. Then on Saturday, Homestead will entertain Fremont at noon.
Boys volleyball
The Homestead and King's Academy boys volleyball teams each came up winners last week, but Fremont lost a tough four-game decision to Leigh.
The Mustangs improved to 6-3 for the year with a 15-2, 15-7, 15-4 nonleague win over Willow Glen. Josh Cavin hammered down 19 kills to lead Homestead to the victory.
King's knocked off Valley Christian of Dublin 15-4, 11-15, 15-12, 15-6. The Knights are now 2-0 in the Private Schools League and 3-2 for the year.
Fremont lost a tough 15-11, 16-14, 12-15, 15-10 nonleague decision to Leigh last week despite getting 18 kills from 5-foot-6 sophomore Lance Lesui. The Firebirds are now 3-4 for the year.
Mustangs get even
Three Homestead golfers shot even par last week to lead the Mustangs to back-to-back wins over Fremont in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Freshman Daniel Cochran carded a 35 at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course to drive the Mustangs to a 184-210 win over Fremont.
Senior Jameel Hussein and freshman David Krause followed with 35s later in the week in a 185-209 win over Fremont on the same course.
The two wins helped the Mustangs improve to 4-0 in league play and to 7-2 for the year. Fremont slipped to 1-5 in the division and to 2-6 for the year.
"This is the second season for the golf program at Homestead," said coach Donna Chavez. "Last year, we got off to a slow start. This season should be much stronger."
