County sues paint manufacturers
Santa Clara County last week filed suit against eight U.S. paint manufacturers and the Lead Industries Association. The suit contends that paint manufacturers knew of health hazards associated with lead paint as early as 1904, yet concealed that knowledge and continued to produce and promote the use of lead paint. The county will ask the courts to certify the case as a class action lawsuit, thereby potentially including all public jurisdictions in the state of California.
The action against the painting industry is the only one of its kind undertaken by a county.
