    Schools win money

Stocklmeir and Nimitz elementary schools have received $1000 and $400 respectively from Loehmnan's Plaza. Students, parents, and educators from the two Sunnyvale schools saved receipts from shopping at the center's shops in boxes located at the shopping center and at the schools. For generating the most sales, ($26,640), Stocklmeir's Parent Teacher Association claimed the first place prize. The PTA plans to use the money to fund teachers' aides in the school. Nimitz plans to uses its money to subsidize the cost of renting instruments.

    District celebrates 75th Anniversary

Hundreds of parents, students, alumni and supporters of Fremont Union High School District on March 26 thrilled to the sounds of the district's 75th Anniversary Celebration at the De Anza College Flint Center in Cupertino. The event featured four major ensembles directed by FUHSD employees who also are district graduates, as well as four performance dance groups advised by district graduates.

Steve Wozniak of Apple Computer, a Homestead High Graduate, served as distinguished emcee of the event and conducted the student band in a performance of John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes".

District Superintendent Joe Hamilton said he would like to make the musical celebration a yearly event to showcase district talent.

    County sues paint manufacturers

Santa Clara County last week filed suit against eight U.S. paint manufacturers and the Lead Industries Association. The suit contends that paint manufacturers knew of health hazards associated with lead paint as early as 1904, yet concealed that knowledge and continued to produce and promote the use of lead paint. The county will ask the courts to certify the case as a class action lawsuit, thereby potentially including all public jurisdictions in the state of California.

The action against the painting industry is the only one of its kind undertaken by a county.
