    'Birds win two of three

The Fremont boys volleyball team won two of three matches last week, beating Oak Grove and Mountain View but losing a tough decision to Valley Christian.

The Firebirds won their lone match in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, turning back Mountain View 15-11, 15-9, 15-11. Kelen Sorauf nailed eight kills to lead the 'Birds to the win in their league opener.

Fremont, 2-3 for the year, had opened the week with a 15-12, 15-11, 15-5 win over Oak Grove in nonleague play. Kevin Elliott was the kills leader in the Fremont win with seven.

The only loss of the week for the Firebirds came against Valley Christian in another nonleague test. Despite eight kills by Daniel McNeil, the 'Birds fell to the Warriors 15-12, 15-7, 15-11.

In other local boys volleyball play, Aaron Mansfield's 14 kills helped Homestead ran its season record to 10-0 with a 15-2, 15-8, 15-10 nonleague win over Leland, and The King's Academy lost 15-9, 15-13, 15-11 to Willow Glen to slip to 2-5 in nonleague action.

    CCS scholastic champs

They may not have been any Central Coast Section championships on the field or on the mat this winter, but some athletes at both Lynbrook and Fremont were CCS champs none the less--in the classroom.

The Lynbrook wrestling team and the Fremont girls soccer team were champions in the CCS Scholastic competition for the 2000 winter season.

The CCS recognizes the varsity team in each sport with the highest collective grade point average, and presents each school with a team trophy and all of the team members with individual certificates.
