Support Measure H
We write to encourage Sunnyvale residents to support Measure H. This important measure will provide desperately needed fundamental repairs and renovations at Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, Cupertino and Monta Vista High Schools. Just as our homes age over time and need repairs, the same is true at our local high schools. Parts of Fremont High School are 70 years old, and the other schools are over 30 years old. All are in need of serious repairs. Measure H will repair or replace old and leaking roofs, update electrical systems to accommodate computers, retrofit old buildings for seismic safety, build additional classrooms and much, much more. By state mandate, 100 percent of Measure H revenue would go toward facility renovation. None of it could be spent on administrative costs; even the purchase of new desks or textbooks is prohibited.
We have already seen dramatic results from the bond measure two years ago that funded renovations at our elementary and middle schools. Measure H will provide these same types of improvements to the high schools and give Sunnyvale children a safer and better learning environment. For those of you without children in our school system who feel you might not directly benefit from Measure H, we encourage you to think about how the value of your home will improve as the quality of our schools is improved.
Please join us in casting a vote for the students of our community--on April 14, vote yes on Measure H.

Mayor's letter was amusing
I was amused to read Jim Roberts' letter to The Sun in which the mayor chided The Sun for inaccurately reporting on the litigation between the Mercury News and the city of Sunnyvale. Apparently the mayor misplaced a year from his appointment calendar. I trust he's ready for the year 2000.

Mayor's letter diverted attention from the real issues
Sunnyvale Mayor Jim Roberts attempted to divert readers from the central issue of the Rowe/city of Sunnyvale issue: Rowe was tossed out of office in a blatant power grab assisted by key members of the paid city staff.
Specifically, Roberts claims, "the City Council did not 'banish her from City Hall except to attend regular Council meetings.' " That statement is belied by the memorandum dated Sept. 26, 1995, from Barbara Waldman, on behalf of the other members of the City Council, to Frances Rowe. That letter states, in part, "you shall stay away from City Hall except when it is necessary for you to attend a meeting. Your council materials and correspondence shall be delivered to you at your home."
The Sunnyvale City Council has been engaged in a very expensive vendetta for several years. Jim Roberts' letter is just one example of the obfuscation and lies that they have been dealing in. It is time for them to stop wasting the citizens' money, obey the provisions of the Brown Act and move on. Perhaps some of the more vicious members will do the right thing and resign.

Single Squares welcomes dancers of all ages
Sunnyvale Single Squares would like to clarify the article entitled "Single seniors socialize," which recently appeared in The Sun under the column title "Seniors."
All ages love square dancing and we have a class to teach them how. Our current class is about to graduate, but there will be another class starting next September. We welcome all single adults.
Concerning being "kicked out," we have a ceremony for people who met and married in the club involving being "booted out." We still have a boot, in pretty sad condition after many years of employment, but nobody gets to keep "the boot." It's strictly ceremonial (and celebratory!). Trouble is, we find it increasingly difficult to replace those who are "booted out." If you're single, come join the fun. You may find the love of your life.
We are proud of our "sweethearts" and enjoy inviting them back for our annual "Sweethearts Hoedown" around Valentine's Day. Some couples miss us so much they occasionally visit on club nights just to stay in touch. You'll find us dancing together at other clubs and hoe-downs--we tend to stick together wherever we meet. If you'd like to receive a newsletter of our activities, call 997-8816.

Sports coverage on certain teams has diminished
My name's Melissa Westgate, and I'm a junior at Fremont High School. I'm writing to the paper because of articles I have noticed in the sports section over the last two years. I'm very pleased that you cover the high school sports, but I feel that you should try and include all sports instead of just the standard ones such as football, basketball, baseball, and softball. I know you do cover other sports, but I don't feel you give them enough attention.
I've been on the Fremont Varsity swim team for three years now, and I've noticed the coverage of our meets has declined. My freshman year, two of our dual meets got in, along with league finals and CCS. My sophomore year, I was very disappointed at the amount of coverage we got. The only meet that made it into the paper was the dual meet between Homestead and Fremont. Our league finals and CCS results weren't even reported. This year, to my dismay, I have opened the paper every week to find lengthy stories on basketball (whose season has been over for two months), baseball, and softball, but nothing on track, tennis, boys volleyball, badminton, or swimming. To me, this seems a little unfair.
Thank you for your time, and I hope that you will take my opinion into consideration when deciding which stories to print next week.
